New Motion Regarding Online Voting

New Motion Regarding Online Voting

TO BE PRESENTED AND VOTED UPON AT THE JANUARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2019

At the General Membership Meeting of October 17, 2018 the membership approved the implementation of an online voting system for future elections starting in 2020. The 2020 start date was based on the assumption that 2020 would be the first year members at Grand River Transit would need the new system to vote on a Strike Mandate during contract negotiations and vote on Contract Ratification when negotiations concluded with a new collective agreement (our members at Great Canadian Coaches already use this online voting system). One in-person polling station will still be provided when the online system is implemented.

However, since the the original approval was given in October we have had to call a By-Election for the recently vacated Unit Chairperson position for Grand River Transit. The date to vote in this By-Election will be Wednesday, January 30, 2019 (2 weeks after the January General Membership Meeting) and the run-off vote (if required in the event no candidate received a majority during the first vote) will be one week later on Wednesday, February 6, 2019. As such, the Executive Board would like membership approval to immediately move forward the implementation of the new online voting system from 2020 to accommodate this By-Election.

The following motion will be introduced and voted upon (under Article 6.2 of the Local 4304 By-Laws) at the January General Membership Meeting.

MOTION: That Local 4304 immediately implement the online voting system approved by the membership on October 17, 2018 instead of in 2020.

It is the hope of your Executive Board that you will come out and vote in favour of this motion to allow the online voting system to be used for the GRT Unit Chair By-Election.
