Notice of Motion

NOTICE OF MOTION
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE UNIFOR LOCAL 4304 BY-LAWS, THE FOLLOWING MOTIONS WERE TABLED AT THE OCTOBER GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING AND WILL BE VOTED ON, OR RESOLVED, AT THE NOVEMBER GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING (WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 17, 2021):

MOTION: To assign work to an operator who fails to make their choices on bidweb by way of a standardized procedure.
MOVED BY: Mark Cosgrove
SECONDED BY: Devon Smith

Notice of Motion is that operators who fail to make their choices on Bidweb during sign-up procedures — or who fail to make enough choices — are assigned work by way of a standardized procedure rather than the past-practice of reviewing previous selections and trying to match these. The standardized procedure would be to simply assign the first available group to that operator (I.E., the lowest group numerically, and the first rotation alphabetically) as this group would generally be accepted to be the most senior work available. This procedure would apply only to operators who fail to make selections, or enough selections, and any IT failures with Bidweb will be handled as in the past, requiring proof of selections.

Making selections on Bidweb is the responsibility of every operator, and failing to do so can create a significant burden of time and responsibility on the process, as well as the members of the scheduling committees, and can impact all subsequent operators. Given the abundance of criteria an operator may consider when making selections, it’s very likely they wouldn’t be happy with a choice made by someone else anyway, so a standardized procedure clarifies expectations for everyone involved.

From Article 36 of the Collective Agreement: SIGN-UPS: Employees will submit their choices as early as the day the bid list is posted on-line and as late as the 59th second before their group is scheduled to be processed… Any employee who fails to make their selections within their time period will have their work assignment selected at the discretion of the Union Representative monitoring the signup.
