Seatbealts

To All Members of Unifor 4304,

FYI:

Transit Manager Ken McCready notified me this morning that a memo will be posted soon letting all operators know that seatbelts must be worn properly. Operators who are caught not using the seatbelts correctly will be disciplined.

Please use your safety belts correctly it is not worth being disciplined over and I am quite sure supervisors will be out monitoring this issue.

This is not a regional policy but falls under section 106 of the Highway Traffic Act.

Tim Jewell – President 4304

Concerns About Face Coverings / Masks

To All Brothers/Sisters,

We were informed today that some members have approached management about other members not wearing their face coverings/masks indoors.

As this pandemic moves on we are all supposed to do our part to help to straighten the curve. Since last March when this pandemic began, public health and health professionals made it very clear that we should, social distance, sneeze into our elbow, wash our hands for 20 seconds and wear a Face Covering or Mask.

I don’t think that members should have to go to management and ask them to monitor certain areas because other members are not wearing their face covering or mask and that those members feel their safety is at risk. Come on folks let’s have a little common courtesy for each other.

Management has made it very clear that they will be monitoring all locations where face coverings or masks must be worn.

The Waterloo region’s mandatory face-covering bylaw has been extended to May 31st, 2021.

Cleaning Your Work Area and Lunchroom/Bathroom Use

To All Brothers/Sisters,

*Please remember it is mandatory to clean your work area whenever you take over another bus. Management is pushing this issue and for those who are not cleaning your work area, discipline will be given. It is all of our responsibility to protect each other. In speaking with a health and safety rep I was told that gloves and sanitizers are not available at satellite locations. We have brought forward these concerns to management and our health and safety committee are directly involved. If there are no gloves when you show up for a shift, fill out an H/S concern form and let your rep know. If you finish work at the garage after shift, replenish your gloves then for your next shift.

*Washroom facilities. We have had a number of complaints about members having to clean the washrooms before using them. This is disgusting. Let’s have a little courtesy towards each other. Since at most locations, we are sharing all the washrooms together it is very important that we leave the washroom in a manner that the next person can use it without cleaning it first.

*Unifor Regional is working on having a meeting for all regional locals via zoom sometime in November. Details are still being worked out but our regional director is looking for agenda items and to see how many are interested in attending this regional meeting. The regional area is KW, Cambridge, Guelph and Brantford. If you have any ideas for agenda items pertaining to transit and if you interested in attending please send me an email at president@unifor4304.org.

*COVID-19 cases are growing every day in Ontario and in the region, remember, cough into your elbow, wash your hands for 20 seconds as often as possible and wear a mask or face covering whenever possible and reach out to someone who is alone during this pandemic. A few minutes of your time means the world.

Tim Jewell – President Unifor 4304

Sick Bank Grievance

To all Members,

A month ago we put in a group grievance to have sick bank replenished if you had to self isolate due to COVID-19. Today we got the response from the region that the grievance was denied.

We need more specifics to strengthen our argument. We are asking for anyone who had to take time off to provide the following information:

1.) The reason why public health directed you to stay home?

2.) And the dates or days you were off?

Please send information to Tim Jewell at timjewell4304@gmail.com or Lisa Main at lisamainvp@gmail.com.

In Solidarity,

Tim Jewell – President Unifor 4304

Bus Shields Update

Brothers/Sisters,

There was a work refusal this evening and as a result, the region is looking at a way to have the new plexiglass shields secured in an open position. In the meantime here is the directive the region has given the union.

1.) If your alright to drive with the shield closed then do so.

2.) If you can secure the shield in the open position then you can do so.

3.) If you cannot see because of glare or you feel it’s not safe then dispatch was been advised to continue to change off the buses for tonight and tomorrow until a solution for securing them is found.

Remember, if you cannot see out the right side or feel it’s not safe then ask for a change off. If you are refused a change off, ask again. If you are denied the request for a change off then you have the right to refuse.

In Solidarity,

Unifor Local 4304
